This short film highlights the importance of recognizing early signs of change in an older adult and taking steps to seek support.

About this series:

This three-part film series follows Sharon and her family as they navigate the complex realities of aging, independence, and care. Each chapter reflects a different stage in their journey—from early recognition to thoughtful planning.

Between the lines

Sharon’s son begins to notice subtle changes in her behavior. Concerned, he seeks guidance from a primary care provider, in this case, a nurse practitioner—marking the beginning of their journey toward understanding and support. This film highlights:

  • Recognizing early signs of cognitive change
  • The role of family members in initiating care
  • Importance of professional support

The Road Ahead

In this second short film, Sharon’s son brings her to an occupational therapist/driving rehabilitation specialist for a fitness to drive evaluation which includes the clinical assessment, the on-road assessment, and summary of the results by the specialist to Sharon and her family. This film highlights:

  • The importance of a comprehensive driving evaluation
  • Typical assessments used to determine fitness to drive
  • Driving errors on the road that are common for individuals with cognitive decline
  • Common reactions of older adults during a comprehensive driving evaluation

Transportation Planning

The third film, being planned for completion in 2026, will be the final step – assisting Sharon in adjusting to life without driving. An occupational therapist works with Sharon and her family in strategies to ensure Sharon still engages with others outside her home and goes to the places she wants and needs to go.  This film highlights:

  • The importance of the transportation planning process
  • Common frustrations with cessation of driving with strategies to overcome
